The Gordon Stockade is located near Stockade Lake on the western edge of Custer State Park. The Original Stockade was erected in six weeks by the John Gordon Party in the winter of 1874-1875. The restoration process took almost six years to complete.
Wyss Associates, Inc. recommended improvements to the site be made in order to better use and interpret the facility as part of long term planning for the Stockade Lake area.
Restoration work included:
- Construction of new perimeter walls and historically accurate corner bastions
- Restoration of four of the seven cabins
- Construction of a new parking area with a trail leading to the Stockade
- Interpretive signage along the trail highlighting the historical significance this event had on the history of the Black Hills
